Dear Customer

In this month's issue of our newsletter we will continue our series "Removing Ambiguity Within Power Quality Terminology" and, in particular, Power Interruptions.

It could be weeks before Florida officials know what left millions of people in the dark a couple of weeks back. The outage was triggered by a glitch at a substation, but power officials don't know how the glitch happened.  As many as three million homes and businesses lost power along a 300-mile stretch of the Florida peninsula.

Unfortunately, different terminology has been used to describe power interruptions creating confusion and making it difficult to discuss, study and propose accurate solutions to resolve power quality problems.

This FL outage certainly can be categorized as a "Power Interruption" but further categorization ranging from Instantaneous, Momentary, and Temporary to Sustained Interruption is required to properly assess how a solution may have minimized or eliminated downtime for your home or business.

Download our article for a simple understanding of the Power Interruption definitions, causes and solutions.

Whether you're in need of UPS Systems, Batteries, Switching Power Supplies, Telecom DC Power Products, cooling systems, packaging solutions, or a complete end-to-end power protection system, Power Solutions offers the largest variety of products manufactured by the names you trust.

We appreciate your business and your referrals.

Kind Regards,

Understanding Power Interruptions

An interruption is defined as the complete loss of supply voltage or load current.  Depending on the duration these interruptions can be further categorized as follows:

Instantaneous -

0.5 to 30 cycles

Momentary -

30 cycles to 2 seconds

Temporary -

2 seconds to 2 minutes

Sustained -

greater than 2 minutes

The term "sustained interruption" describes a situation in a commercial utility system where automatic protective devices, because of the nature of the fault, cannot bring power back online, and manual intervention is required.

The commonly used term "outage" actually refers to the state of a component in the system that has failed to function as expected (IEEE Std 100-1992).

What causes an interruption can vary and at times much investigation is required to determine the root cause, as evidenced in the recent Florida Power Outage.
