Cooling for Small Rooms & IT Closets
The compaction of IT equipment and the simultaneous increase in power consumption are creating significant cooling challenges for businesses. Cooling for small rooms and IT closets goes largely ignored until overheating occurs.
One problem is that while the overall total power and cooling capacity for an area may be adequate, the distribution of cool air to the correct areas may not be. Blade Servers are a frequent culprit in this because, while they offer more processing power than traditional servers and consume less power per server, they dramatically increase heat density.
Suitable Temperature. The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the IT equipment suppliers usually agree on these standards:

Any temperature above 90F should be avoided to reduce risk of equipment failure furthermore this is also the maximum temperature for light work loads per OSHA.
If you deploy a UPS in your room or closet please note that temperatures above 104F will reduce the life of your UPS battery to 18 months.
Heat Removal. Heat in an IT environment allowed to remain accumulates raising the temperature. Every kilowatt of heat used by the IT Equipment creates a kilowatt of heat power that must be removed. On occasion lightly loaded (below 1500 Watts) small rooms can be cooled using conduction or ventilation systems however many rooms will require dedicated cooling.
Cooling and your UPS: It is a common practice to use a small UPS system in your wiring closets and small rooms. For most small UPS units, the heat they generate is insignificant as compared to the IT equipment. It is important to note that in case of a power outage the IT equipment will continue to generate heat and your cooling system must continue to operate should you desire run times beyond 5 minutes. Configuring a portable Air Conditioning Unit (spot cooler) with a UPS can be the ideal solution. Because of the compressor in rush current, this configuration can be complex. Portable Air Conditioners and their versatility: CoolCube 10 is the industry's only modular air conditioning unit—the same 10,000 Btu/h base module can be easily adapted to fit into virtually any application. By adding the respective accessory kit, the small but powerful CoolCube 10 spot cooler can be deployed in a variety of space-saving alternatives, including rack-mounting in a standard 19-inch rack, mounting on a shelf, or hanging from a drop ceiling. Even more, multiple CoolCube modules can be stacked for capacity or redundancy, delivering up to 40,000 Btu/h with standard 120V power. The compact design of the CoolCube also provides easy mobility as a portable unit.
