The standard APC Smart-UPS is a line-interactive UPS, which means it conditions power and corrects minor fluctuations without switching to battery, but does transfer to battery during a power outage (with a very brief transfer time). The Smart-UPS Online (SRT) is a double-conversion online UPS, which means the connected load always runs from inverter-generated power, providing zero transfer time and complete isolation from all utility power problems – surges, sags, noise, and outages. The Online model is the appropriate choice for highly sensitive equipment that cannot tolerate any power interruption or disturbance.

The APC Smart-UPS Modular Ultra is an on-line UPS that delivers ultra-high power density with lithium-ion batteries in a modular, internally redundant-capable architecture. It is designed for organizations that need to maximize power protection within a small physical footprint – typically edge computing environments, dense server rooms, and colocation facilities. The modular design allows for capacity expansion and internal redundancy without replacing the entire system.

Yes. APC offers several UPS models with built-in lithium-ion batteries. The Smart-UPS with Lithium-Ion provides 3x the battery life of comparable VRLA-battery models, a significantly smaller footprint, and a shorter recharge time. The Smart-UPS Ultra and Smart-UPS Modular Ultra also feature lithium-ion batteries. For three-phase applications, Schneider Electric Galaxy series systems are available with lithium-ion battery options as well.

Both models have been discontinued by Schneider Electric. The Symmetra LX reached end-of-life in December 2024, and the recommended replacement is the Smart-UPS Modular Ultra. The Smart-UPS VT has been discontinued and will reach end-of-service-life on December 31, 2030. Power Solutions can help you identify the best replacement for either model based on your current load requirements, runtime needs, and facility constraints. A: Choosing the right APC UPS starts with three questions: What is the total load in watts (not VA) of the equipment you need to protect? How long does the UPS need to run during an outage? And does your application require double-conversion online protection (zero transfer time, complete power conditioning) or is line-interactive protection sufficient?
For most single-phase IT applications — servers, network closets, workstations — the APC Smart-UPS line covers the majority of requirements from 500VA to 5kVA. For applications requiring true double-conversion protection, the Smart-UPS Online (SRT) or Smart-UPS Ultra are the appropriate choice. For three-phase loads above 10 kVA, the Symmetra PX or Schneider Electric Galaxy series applies.
Power Solutions’ selection guide walks through each of these factors with specific model recommendations by application type. For application-specific guidance, call 800-876-9373 — our team can identify the right model based on your actual load and environment.

A: APC by Schneider Electric is the most widely deployed UPS brand in the world and is a strong choice for a broad range of applications — particularly IT environments, data centers, network closets, and edge computing deployments. APC’s key strengths include the depth and maturity of its product lineup (from 300VA desktop units to 1,600kVA Symmetra MW systems), its EcoStruxure software ecosystem for UPS monitoring and management, and the breadth of its authorized partner and service network.
Eaton is a leading alternative, particularly well-regarded for its power management software (Eaton Intelligent Power Manager), its strong TAA-compliant UPS options for government applications, and its G3 series for outdoor and industrial environments.
Vertiv/Liebert is widely specified in large data center and colocation environments and is often preferred for high-density three-phase applications where Liebert’s service infrastructure is already in place. Power Solutions is a vendor-agnostic critical power infrastructure company. We are an APC Elite Partner, an authorized Eaton service provider, and an authorized Vertiv/Liebert service provider.
Power Solutions is an APC Elite Partner, an authorized Eaton service provider, and an authorized Vertiv/Liebert service provider. Because we supply and service all three brands, we have no financial incentive to favor one manufacturer over another. To compare options for a specific application, contact our team with your load requirements in kW, your existing infrastructure, required runtime, and any redundancy requirements — we will provide an unbiased recommendation at no charge. A: APC Elite Partner is the highest tier of authorization in Schneider Electric’s APC channel partner program. Achieving Elite Partner status requires meeting Schneider Electric’s standards for technical training and certification, revenue performance, and service quality — it is not available to all resellers. As an Elite Partner, Power Solutions has factory training across the full APC product lineup, priority access to inventory, and authorization to supply and service every APC product family — not a limited subset.
For customers, this means you are working with a team that has direct manufacturer support, deep application knowledge, and accountability for the solution after the sale. Power Solutions can assist with pre-sale configuration, sizing, and application engineering at no charge as part of the procurement process.
